We've seen the beautiful wedding and Blessingway now it's time to see the celebration! With the help of the fabulous team of Special Events Rental, Flowers by Marla Courtney Wood and Epicure Catering we transformed Jonathan and Marissa's home in Northport, Michigan into a slice of Maui and the Four Seasons.

The party was inspired by the regal purple hue of amethyst, rich teals and blues reflecting the colors of the ocean and their view from their balcony, the tropical floral from Hawaii and the gorgeous mahogany wood throughout their Northern Michigan home. Through hand dyed silk ribbons on their save the dates, 100% recyclable and reusable invitations, gorgeous crinkle taffeta linens, floral fresh from Hawaii and a menu inspired by Momma's (Maui's famed restaurant) we brought the volcanic isles to Lake Michigan!

Perhaps one of the most generous acts to date for A Day in May, in lieu of gifts Jonathan and Marissa set up registries with three of their favorite charitable organizations: ErthNxt, Circle of Blue and E-Three Labs (which is Jonathan and Marissa's organization dedicated to bringing solar powered computer labs to the developing world).

Thank you Jonathan, Marissa and family! It was delightful working with you all and creating a party your guests will soon not forget!

Meet Tana

At A Day in May we receive many inquiries for employment. This past fall we announced, very quietly, that we were looking for an intern/assistant for 2010. In January, while I was in Florida, I received the email I had been waiting for... Tana Steinberger, an interior designer from Chicago was looking to move to Northern Michigan and was interested in working for us.

Her professional, yet personable, email set the tone and we met for coffee this past spring for an interview. Dressed with style, armed with confidence and poise I knew she would be a great fit; not to mention posses talents that would be key in growing A Day in May.

In May of this year Tana joined A Day in May! She has been an integral part of our success this season thus far and will continue to be a huge asset to our team. With an eye for detail that compliments our existing vision and a passion for the creative, I'm excited to have her on board!

Marissa & Jonathan, Part II

Jonathan and Marissa's intimate Hawaiian wedding ceremony was magical and romantic- they celebrated with their closest family at the Four Season's in Maui. With the rest of their family and friends back in Michigan A Day in May was planning a wedding reception that would bring Hawaii to the north shore of the Leelanau Peninsula!

Kicking off their wedding celebration weekend, a Blessingway was held in Northport honoring Marissa. The tea ceremony was performed by Angela Mackie of Light of Day where the ladies enjoyed a few varieties of Angela's organic blends. The women all sat in a circle around an empty wreath. Once each had taken a turn presenting Marissa with a token of their love for her, the wreath would be filled and given to her as a gift.

Moments of laughter roared amongst the group along with tears of joy and humility- a beautiful send off for a beautiful bride...

This past fall we had the pleasure of working with Grand Rapids based, husband and wife team Kai and Kayley Heeringa of Kia Heeringa Photography. For over four years the duo have been photographing together from Northern Michigan to Scotland and everywhere in-between!

Wedding days seem to go so quickly for all of those involved and it is important to capture the people and details for our clients and Kai and Kayley are just the people to do so. They love to show their clients a perspective of their weddings that they themselves were not able to see until well after the last candle is blown out.

Providing their clients with images that are unique and true to their event they make their photography interesting to everyone viewing it, not just to those who know the subjects.

Last May I met Marissa and Jonathan at Amical for lunch in downtown Traverse City after their wedding... yes, you read that right! They eloped in March to Maui and then we threw a party for 200 of their closest family and friends in September at their home here Northern Michigan on Lake Michigan to celebrate!

Before we dive into the lakeshore tropical wedding reception I wanted to share with you their intimate Hawaiian wedding at the Four Seasons in Maui that inspired the details and design back home... Photos by Scott Drexler Photography.

The lush tropical floral of the island, sophisticated purple hues and gorgeous sunset vistas were the backdrop of Jonathan and Marissa's wedding ceremony and reception. The only difference... 4,300 miles, fresh water beaches and one killer party!

One of my favorite design/decor elements to a wedding is the stationery. From the first glimpse at your wedding via your save the date or engagement announcement, you set the tone for your big day.

We use stationery for more than a way of communicating our clients information and details about their day, it's a part of their design and "brand" for their wedding. A great way to add a cohesive design element that can carry over through your printed pieces and overall event design are through monograms. They are still trending in 2010 but these are your grandmother's monograms...

Oscar Fashion

If you are addicted to beautiful gowns like I am, I bet you were watching the world's most "diverse" fashion show on Sunday night- the Oscars. Aside from honoring and paying credit to those fantastic films of 2009 it's the single most watched fashion event ever.

Here are some of my favorites and trend worthy gowns that are sure to inspire today's bride and her entourage!

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa, Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta and Kate Winslet in YSL all glimmered in their gilded dresses. Metallics are here to stay and these ladies of the silver screen donned Oscar's favorite color.

Demi Moore in Atelier Versace, Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab Haute Couture and Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture were each a vision. Feminine ruffles flattered each figure with exquisite fabric and layering- texture galor!

Vera Farmiga in Marchesa, Jennifer Lopez in Armani Privé and Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci gave way to form and function. Fantastic silhouettes.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries van Noten, Kristin Stewart in Monique Lhuillier and Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Haute Couture looked amazing in varying shades of blue. From printed to painted fabrics blue is a great color this season.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Haute Couture and Meryl Streep in Chris March took femininity to a whole other level. Perfect shapes and detailing for Mothers of the Bride or Groom or your sophisticated bride.

Kate & Brian, Part II

When chatting with Kate and Brian I knew that with them the best really was yet to come. But in the mean time, they wanted to throw one heck of a party for their friends and family who traveled from all over the country to be part of their Northern Michigan. For those who have never had the privilege of visiting Leland you'll find her tucked along the shore of Lake Michigan with North and South Manitou looking on... those famous sleeping bears.

I couldn't be more in love with today's post- Kate and Brian's wedding was the quintessential happy day. I think you'll agree with these fabulous images and insights to their day via Cory Weber Photography!

Kate's talent in the design industry paired with Brian's creative vision gave an uptown feel to this down home wedding. Guests dined on lovely season meal and shared to-die-for ice cream cake by Moomer's Ice Cream while Ron Getz and his band serenaded the newlyweds and their entourage into the evening.

I'm so blessed to say that we were able to be a part of their special day. To the Mr. and Mrs., congratulations on beauty inside and out. I look forward to what the world has in store for you next!

Kate & Brian, Part I

Yesterday you saw the fabulous work of local photographer Cory Weber and today on A Day in May we have the oh-so-chic wedding of Kate and Brian!

Kate and I did not meet face to face until two months before the big day but I will never forget our introduction. As her mother-in-law said the day of her wedding, "Kate is a diamond in the rough, and we're so blessed Brian found her." Need I say more?

Brian and Kate both share a love of Northern Michigan. Kate having grown up in Suttons Bay and Brian having summered on the shores of Lake Leelanau. When it was time to plan their NYC meets Leland wedding Kate looked no further than Leland's Old Art Building. The white washed siding and beautifully imperfect interior played host to the colorful floral and guests that filled the room.

Every detail was perfect down the rain that filled the skies well after the I do's... they are the real deal friends! Enjoy!

Kristin & Phil, Part III

As we wrap up the mountain chic wedding of Kristin and Phil we saved the best for last... the party! Kristin and Phil know how to have a good time, enjoying the most of every day and all the beauty of life. And, they know how to throw a great party!

With a fabulous band a "must" the couple hired Colorado superstars Funkiphino from Boulder, CO. Jessica and Chris have hand selected it's members from an elite group of talent drawing fans from all over. The week before Kristin and Phil's soiree they played in a music festival in Colorado where Michael Jackson's guitar player (from all of his world tours) rocked out with them! Pretty cool huh!

In keeping with Kristin's fresh, summery color palette the Grand Hall at Copper Mountain was transformed- the picturesque Rocky Mountains looked down as guests dined and danced was the perfect ending to the picture-perfect day!

Another round of applause to James Christianson for the fabulous photography! Thanks Kristin and Phil for letting us share in your lives and in all the fun!

Artistry is expressed across all creative platforms including event design. Through fabulous retail displays and media I am constantly inspired by the “styling” of an event.

Styling (or staging) is a perfect blend of textures, colors, patterns and “things” that work together to enhance a particular setting or emotion through visual stimuli.

With the book on event planning and design ever evolving, as a designer I am constantly drawn to talents like like Erin Swift and Taryn Bickley (from Michigan) who have taken the art of styling to a new level.

Erin’s work has graced the cover of Gourmet and Elegant Bride. She’s a regular contributor for Oprah Winfrey's O at Home and has been dazzling us all with her creative arranging and staging techniques.

A twisted look at wedding gowns and femininity. Who wouldn’t want to embody such sophistication while layered in gorgeous fabrics?

Perfect inspiration piece for designers just starting in the industry- look at Erin’s perfectly placed textured pieces and her use (or lack of) color and lighting.

Taryn Bickley's style is completely swoonable! With launching Metro Detroit Bride in 2004 her fashion journalism career and talent speaks volumes by simply turning a page in one of the posh Detroit Magazines she styles.

Kristin & Phil, Part I

This next wedding was one of my favorites from 2009 for very personal reasons- one of my best friends was the bride, we planned and designed the entire wedding and the couple was married in Colorado (my second favorite place on earth to Traverse City).

I've known Kristin since she moved to Traverse City in 1996. It wasn't until High School that we became close and when it was time to fly the coup we, along with three other BF's, landed in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan. It was during our Senior year at Michigan that Kristin and Phil fell in love. After graduation in 2005 Kristin moved to Florida for Physical Therapy school with Phil beside her every step of the way. In 2008 the couple moved to Colorado Springs and so their story begins...

Both Kristin and Phil love the outdoors and adventure so a Rocky Mountain wedding was the perfect combination of natural beauty and exploration. The couple fell in love instantly with Copper Mountain Resort's and it's mountain side location. With less than a year to plan we jumped into action.

A Day in May, Event Planning & Design primarily works with clients planning their weddings and events in Northern Michigan however with 2009 complete and 2010 on the horizon we have clients in Colorado, California and Minnesota!

Two of the top three "must have's" (#1 location) for Kristin and Phil were their entertainment and photographer. We'll get to the entertainment later (trust me it's worth the wait), however it's my pleasure to introduce James Christianson...

The wedding ceremony was held at Solitude Station which is 11,200 feet above see level. You could see for miles and miles... it was the picture perfect Colorado wedding AND we made it down the mountain before the afternoon showers. Stay tuned for more details and James' stellar photography.

I was first introduced to Cammie Buehler and Andy Schudlich in 2008 and ever since I've been smitten with their creations, talents and hearts. Epicure Catering is the brain child of these two amazing people who have a sure recipe for success in all elements of catering, service and life.

The Cherry Basket Farm, located in Omena roughly 45 minutes north of Traverse City, is the home to Epicure Catering. Any given day in the summer trucks of local goods are making deliveries at the Farm for some of the areas most talked about parties, weddings and dishes.

It would be easy for me to use our blog as advertising for great local talent but that's not what we do. All of the vendors we recommend on our blog, and website, are based purely on their performance and service to our clients. With that being said I would recommend any of our clients {without question} to this dynamic duo- they have killer food (even Mario say's so!) and world class service.

One of our staff said it best when they walked into the kitchen of a home where Epicure was catering a party for us... "there was an unmistakable calm in the air. It was tension free. 2010 is a year for intentional personalization for our clients. We have a bride honoring her Hawaiian heritage with a lei ceremony during their wedding, a Parisian groom with killer design style and another bride who isn't crazy about flowers but wants a "yummy summer vibe" to her charming August wedding.

When I saw maida vale's post about Peppermint Cloud I knew I had to share this with our client and you, our readers!

I am in love with her creations for their simple and clean styling with plenty of texture to make any bride {or groom} swoon...

The store used to be filled with my random crafts and had no direction. I got into the whole businesss of making wedding relating products because I am recently engaged and was creating things for my own wedding. I like making things myself because it becomes my own and is a unique piece. My problem is that I have a hard time focusing on just one thing. If I sit down to make one hair piece I end up making five...and that's how my store came to be filled with wedding related products.

I subscribe to 60+ blogs in my Google Reader. (If you don't know what Google Reader is or have yet to create your own, I highly encourage you to do so.) With so many "experts" becoming accessible through blogging and social media, I am constantly fueled and challenged creatively by their works.

From Business, Photography, Food (labeled "Cucina" in my reader), Design, Wedding, etc. I follow all types of blogs. One of my favorite blogs to read is that of Jasmine Star. I don't remember how I found her, probably from one of the many esteemed wedding blogs or national publications that she's graced, however I am drawn in "like a moth to a flame." (Thanks Janet for the eternally great lyric!)

Her work is real, fun and spellbinding but her character and humility is other worldly. Through her strong blog presence and killer technique she's built an amazing business from the ground up. One could assume her blog is about technique, do's and don'ts (there is some of that) but I doubt you'd be prepared for her level of transparency.

One of her posts that I've shared the most with my own clients is one that Glamour Magazine asked her to contribute- The First Look: Groom's Perspective. Here at A Day in May, Event Planning & Design, we are so fortunate to have clients committed to professional photography and the artists behind the lenses. They are so committed that they are willing to sacrifice two hours or more of their time, away from their guests for their own private photoshoots with rockstar photographers.

I hear from many of our clients that cocktails and conversation are what they enjoy the most about weddings they attend. When it comes time to planning their own weddings, extended cocktail time is a "must have." Being so inspired by Jasmine's article, I've been encouraging couples to really think more about their wedding day experience and what they want most. Not necessarily what's been "done before."

Would you be willing to see your groom/bride before the ceremony? Granted, seeing one another before the wedding ceremony is not for everyone. But, it could be for you!

Mary Jane & Jim, Part III

With MJ and Jim celebrating their wedding at a ski resort in the middle of July, we needed a way to bring the snow to summer. MJ wanted a unique escort card display using a chair lift chair. Through a collaborative effort, we designed and created these fabulous Lift Tickets for their guests, Enjoy!

This was a great DIY project that was low cost (minus the chair lift seat!), easy assembly and made a great impact as guests were ushered into the dinner tent from the ski lodge!

Candy bars were HUGE in 2009 thanks to Amy Atlas and her fabulous dessert tablescapes! With MJ and Jim sharing a sweet tooth, a candy bar fit for a King and Queen was a must for their Northern Michigan wedding at Caberfae Peaks...

The candy bar was filled with Jelly Beans, Salt Water Taffy, Gummy's galore and other sweet treats. MJ made the adorable tags using Paper-Source's labels and cellophane bags. It was a huge hit with her nieces and nephews as well as guests seeking a late night snack!

Mary Jane & Jim, Part I

I was in Detroit the end of 2008 driving on the 696 during rush hour traffic (for those unfamiliar with Detroit and it's inhabitant's driving skills, the 696 is like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona) when my phone rang. On the other line was Jane Meyer, the mother of Mary Jane (MJ) Meyer who was to planning a July wedding in Michigan. I'll spare you the details of our hour conversation (yes, while driving and navigating with GPS) but turned out that I had met her daughter while at Michigan State once visiting Kyle AND that they owned the ski resort where my grandparent's were some of the first developers and where my family learned how to ski.

Fast forward two months when I was first reunited with MJ and met Jane over lunch in Traverse City. MJ is a long lost sister with the organization skills of a teacher (yep, she is one!) and a heart as pure as gold. A Day in May, Event Planning & Design stepped into the planning and design process where MJ, Jane and MJ's fiance, Jim, had left off- and boy did we hit the ground running.

MJ and Jim wanted their guests (who traveled across the country but were primarily from Michigan and Chicago) to experience the Northern Michigan they love and the resort where MJ grew up. MJ and her mother Jane loved the vibrant green colors of summer which inspired our fresh yet slightly preppy color scheme!

Mixing the casual and laid back summers of Northern Michigan with the excitement of the city, their July, 25th wedding at Caberfae Peaks, in Cadillac, was perfect- even with the early morning rain! Allow me to introduce Mr. & Mrs. Jim Schremser...

Holiday Hangover- The Rewind

I had grand hopes of blogging through Christmas and New Years filling you all in on our whereabouts and excitement, but obviously that didn't happen. I didn't even post a "Merry Christmas" or "Happy New Year" update... don't hate, I'm sorry.

From December 21 through January 1, we were entertaining and traveling like the Three Wise Men trying to get to Baby Jesus. Due to the extended absence I've decided to create a Holiday Hangover- The Rewind, mega post. The Holidays, for us, are filled with reunions and games, laughter and cocktails and lots of food. We traveled over 1,000 miles and visited with more than 40 of our closest friends and family and had a blast in the process. Check it out...

It happened to be our family Christmas card this year.

Even though Christmas and New Year's has come and gone Kyle, Murphy and I hope that your holiday season was full of love and happiness, rest and celebration and most importantly quality time spent with those you cherish most.

Christmas is less than a week away and I have been inspired this year by the natural beauty of winter and the true meaning of Christmas. I love {this is glamorous} blog for the fantastic eye candy and when I saw this lovely photo post I wanted to share it with you!

Our Christmas table (which you will see after Christmas) is dressed in red and ivory, metallic, elements of whimsy and eclectic holiday fare. This regal look of greenery paired with warm grays and the perfect mix of year round beauty, embodies holiday splendor.

Jessica & Andrew, Part III

We left off with Jessica and Andrew's July 4th wedding in Traverse City, Michigan, right when I was about to reveal the good stuff! After our initial meeting I learned that Jessica had a unique and statement-making style. When she asked if we could design a Moroccan wedding I was thrilled! With vibrant and luminous linens, lush floral and jaw-dropping color here is Jessica and Andrew's wedding reception...

As important as color was to Jessica and Andrew, the "absence of color" was priority on my list. True to her beautiful self, and the one-of-a-kind gal that she is, Jessica was the only "white" in the room!

Jessica & Andrew, Part II

I love weddings. Not in a creepy "I'm-living-my-dreams-through-my-clients" kind of way. I love weddings for their raw emotion, celebration and community. Jessica and Andrew's July 4, 2009 wedding at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa was a fairy tale and Cinderella found her glass slipper. From the moment guests arrived the day was a celebration of Jessica and Andrew's love, their family's love, and the raw emotion of the commitment they made to one another before God and their witnesses.

I also love weddings for the surprise factor! I was so excited that Coleen and Shawn also shared this love of surprises. With Jessica and Andrew in Arizona it was easy to keep things hush, hush. The biggest surprise was the total transformation of the Michigan Ballroom where their reception would take place. Shawn, Coleen and I chose every detail meticulously. Jessica signed off on the linens and a sampling of the details during a spring visit home, but we kept the big look a surprise. (I think we told them there would be "perimeter lighting" and some draping behind the head table. He he! Yes that was a sinister laugh.)

With the help of the ridiculously talented Special Events Rental, Todd Guitar and his team transformed the empty ballroom at the Resort into a Moroccan tent filled with color, light, and elegance. Here is the first glimpse Jessica and Andrew had at their wedding reception... surprise!

And since I love surprises, you will have to wait until tomorrow to see what Andrew and Jessica saw! Today, I want to share one of Jessica's favorite details from the big day. (I cannot take credit for the vendor find, that belongs to my dearest friend Jodi Bos of In Any Event. Thanks Jodi!)

As I said before, Jessica was born to be a bride. When we were planning her wedding ceremony I mentioned rolling down a customized aisle runner for Jessica and her dad to walk down. She loved the idea! We began working with Artistic Floral Design, who specialize in gorgeous cloth runners. The team of Cheryl and Valerie were fabulous in ensuring the width, length and custom painted design were perfect.

Jessica and Andrew chose a beautiful scripture verse for their runner; Mark 10:8 And the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. The runner was a signature element of their ceremony. The two exchanged their vows under the outdoor Pavilion surrounded by beautiful rose gardens.

Jessica & Andrew, Part I

I first met Jessica Keane and Andrew Malek in August 2008 when they were visiting Traverse City for their engagement party. Appeasing Jessica's mom, they agreed to a meeting with me and sparks flew! (Little did we know Jessy and I would become good friends after that meeting.) We were fortunate enough to have planned and designed their entire wedding along side Jessica's dear parents Shawn and Coleen Keane.

The love this couple shares is the real deal and they are just as beautiful on the inside (seriously!). Since their wedding Jessica and Andrew have faced what few adults our age have to face- the loss of a parent. Two months after their wedding day Jessica's father passed away. With Jessica and Andrew living in Arizona during the planning process most of our face-to-face meetings involved Jessica's parents.

I learned so much from Shawn in our informal meetings and feel blessed to have known him, for the short time I did. I approach my job differently since their wedding- Jessica's last real time she spent with her dad was during her wedding. Looking back I can see the tapestry that God wove around their wedding and I am so thankful for the role He chose for us to play.

Shawn wanted Jessy and Andrew to have their dream wedding and was just as excited as I was when talking about linens, lighting and logistics! It was wonderful getting to know Jessica through her parents as well as through her calls and emails. Andrew was never a silent groom as his style is just as polished as Jessica's. Through the planning and design process I quickly learned that Jessica was born to be a bride... and I think you'll agree... meet Jessica and Andrew Malek.

Color of the Year

One of my designing "must haves" are our Pantone swatch books. I love mixing and matching color in design. Our wedding clients usually are inspired by one or two main colors, and we help to "build a look" by layering colors as accents and highlights creating dimension. The 2009 Pantone Color of the Year was Mimosa. Warm yellows are still popular heading into 2010- who doesn't love a sunny, happy yellow?

Pantone just announced their 2010 Color of the Year- Turquoise.

In an excerpt taken straight from Pantone... Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, ithe color of the year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of well-being. Who wouldn't want to include a color that evokes those emotions into their special day?

Inspiring Fresh Ideas

Aletha VanderMaas and I have more than a few things in common- Jen shot each of our weddings, our first names both start with "A," we each have insanely cute dogs, both own an event planning business and share a love for Art's in Glen Arbor! Introduced through our fabulous photographer, Aletha and I chatted via email for two years before breaking bread in September this year.

As the owner and inspiration behind Pearls Events, in Grand Rapids, she is also the founder of Inspiring Fresh Ideas- a site dedicated to helping industry professionals market their own business. Aletha herself programs and designs both her Inspiring Fresh Ideas site, and her Pearls Events Blog.

One of our goals for A Day in May Events, is to actively blog to our readers and followers. Our problem was not an absence of content (my brain is oozing with ideas I want to share), it was a lack of inspiration. Our blog itself was great for personal use (we use Blogger) but it lacked the style/overall look I envisioned for A Day in May. Hence, a few weeks ago I emailed Aletha asking for her assistance.

I'm pretty computer savvy and understand the basics of web design however, Aletha saved me hours of time and frustration! I'd been shopping for a new template for the blog, but didn't know what to do next. Through Aletha's advanced knowledge and time saving techniques, we were up and running in a short time with a whole new look. Here is the change...

Flash back...

About three weeks ago I moved all my personal pictures off my laptop and onto our desktop. My "mobile office" was starting to slow down a little and I was sure the gobs of photos had something to do with that. When I was choosing which photos to keep on the laptop and which ones to move over, I found myself spending a few hours reminiscing. I loved looking at all the smiling faces and memorable moments but, this photo was the one that stole my heart... Here is our little Murphy only 7 weeks old during his first week in his new home.

I took this picture mid morning when the sun was coming through our bathroom windows, bouncing off our linen closet door and reflecting the most brilliant light on our new bundle of love. He was peacefully sleeping on the tile. As Jodi said the other day, "I'm no Jen Kroll," I second that! (But I do love playing around and this was my fun time!)

Murphy makes me laugh every day. He knows when I'm feeling sad or overwhelmed- he brings me his stuffed piggy or stuffed mini-Murph as a gift. Dogs are truly (wo)mans best friend. Kyle and I can't get enough of him and find ourselves bringing him everywhere we go. Good thing my parents love Murph too!

He hasn't lost that adorable face! (Way to go Bennington Hills!) Here is our 73 lb. bundle of love now. We're so thankful he chose us as his parents!

Macare & Dustin, Part III

The longest day of the year was June 20th, 2009. It was also the day Macare Kelly and Dustin Lumbrezer tied the knot in Northern Michigan. With a traditional, and intimate, wedding ceremony in Traverse City the couple and their 200 wedding guests headed to Crooked Creek Ranch located in Cedar, Michigan, for a memorable celebration.

The weather was picture perfect! Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres were enjoyed alfresco encouraging guests to explore the expansive grounds of Crooked Creek. Dinner was served on the lawn which overlooked Lake Leelanau and the owner's horses running through the front pasture. Moving speeches were given by Macare's father (one of the best Father of the Bride toasts I've ever heard!), the maid of honor, best man and Macare's brother.

Immediately following dinner, Macare and Dustin invited all their guests to join them for dessert and dancing in the barn- a massive centennial barn which is one of the many highlights at Crooked Creek Ranch. The dancing continued into the night (which was still rather bright)! For a snack the newlyweds offered a Hot Dog Bar with toppings galore then escaped via a vintage blue Rolls Royce into the night.

I asked Macare to share what her favorite memory from her wedding day was- this is so sweet!
I remember our first dance and crying because I was so incredibly happy that I was married to Dustin. I love dancing at weddings, so I remember getting crazy with all of our friends and family on the dance floor. I loved looking at all our friends and family around us and the expressions on their faces because they were having so much fun. It was so special to think that they were all there for us.

Macare & Dustin, Part II

On Monday I introduced you to our first couple of 2009, Macare and Dustin who were married in Leelanau County, Michigan. Today I want to share with you one of our fabulous DIY projects that Macare and her entourage made into an all out assembly line!

First again I need to shout out the oh so fabulous photos of Jen Kroll Photography (more on this amazing lady later) since the eye candy above was captured through her lens! For Macare's farm chic wedding on Lake Leelanau, their reception tent featured a harvest table layout. With a specific number of seats and guests we needed to ensure everyone had a seat and that their seat was clearly identified. Thus we had an "escort card" and a "place card."

A frequent question we field is the difference between an "escort card" and a "place card." The "escort card" is just that- it "escorts" your guests to their table, it takes them from Point A to Point B. The "place card" defines their "place," where they are seated at the table. For Macare we needed both escort cards and place cards.

* For Macare, we gave one escort card per couple (since the couples were seated at the same table) or single guest. I recommend adding 20% additional cards based on X number of guests in case you mess up!

Steps:
1) Set up an assembly line with the Person #1 in charge of the cards, ink and rubber stamp; Person #2 applies the powder; Person #3 heats the powder.
2) Decide where the stamp will be placed on the card. (For Macare we stamped in the middle of the pre-scored card.) Place the card on the paper plate with the sheet of paper in between. The paper will catch the excess powder. Plug in the heat tool.
3) Person #1- apply the ink to the stamp, blotting the ink pad on top of the stamp for even ink coverage and press stamp on desired card location. Press all sides evenly. (I would suggest cleaning the stamp every so often with the wet cloth then the dry cloth. Ink can build and distort the graphic.)
4) Person #2- with the newly stamped design, work quickly to cover the stamped area with the embossing powder. Once covered, lightly tap off the extra powder onto the sheet of paper to pour back into the container for reuse.
5) Person #3- using Embossing Heat Tool heat up the powdered stamp area to reveal the color and raised design.
6) Allow to dry for at least 2 minutes before handling.
7) Fold the cards in half and write the guest names on the outside and their corresponding table number on the inside.

The final arrangement of Macare and Dusty's escort cards was perfect. We borrowed four cherry lugs from her family and filled them with wheat grass that had been growing at Macare's parent's home. To display the cards themselves, we used plastic floral picks placed in the grass and voila!

As I mentioned there were seating assignments for each guest once they reached their table. To minimize waste and space their menu card doubled as a place card with the guest's name written clearly on the top.

I doubt I speak for myself when I mention I have to set a timer while I'm surfing the web. I love following the many links from site to site as they often lead to great finds like this image from FFFFOUND!. FFFFOUND! is an image sharing site where you can post or search like images that I can easily loose hours in.

This little beauty was posted by designworklife. They are a part of Seamless Creative studio in New York City. In their own words they are "a type-obsessed pattern-freak and a logic-looping webhead."

What I loved about this image (that SC studio found) was the simple period typeface on the storefront signage and the glossy black lighting that accents the sunken wall design. Great example of keeping design simple while still being effective!

Style Me Pretty feature

I am writing this post trying to contain my excitement. Yippee!!!!! If exclamation points were a way to express excitement I would have a whole page full of them! Yesterday our very own MJ and Jim were featured on the uber chic and fabulous Style Me Pretty website! I know right?!?! There should be a whole slew of exclamation points after that sentence.

Mary Jane and Jim were married on July 25th (yes, that is also my birthday) at her family's ski resort in Cadillac, Michigan. Along with MJ and her mother Jane (more design and details later when we feature their wedding on the blog) we helped to plan and design their special day.

MJ had already hired her photographer when we joined creative forces- Widdis Photography of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Brian and Kathy are a husband and wife team with more accolades than I can count. Seriously, Kathy alone has at least three Emmy's (I think). Yes an Emmy. Those shiny awards that are pretty important. Click here to read about their latest award which was given this past October.

Brian and Kathy's unique eye made for the most perfect documentation of MJ and Jim's wedding. And Abby, the incredibly talented founder and style maven behind Style Me Pretty, also recognized their talent. Widdis Photography is a Little Black Book Member.

After the wedding I had coffee with Brian and Kathy while they were up enjoying a relaxing weekend on Elk Lake. We were discussing the possibility of submitting their wedding to some national publications when Kathy mentioned Style Me Pretty and the potential opportunity. I was sold! I check Style Me Pretty daily for inspiration, industry updates and for the simple fact that they are awesome!

Macare & Dustin, Part I

I am sure every wedding planner feels they have the best clients but I know I have the best clients! This year we kicked off our season with a lovely couple, Macare (Kelly) and Dustin Lumbrezer.

I happened to know Macare and Dusty before they contacted A Day in May to help with their wedding. Macare's cousin is one of my best friends Christina (or Tina as mentioned in other posts) and her brother was a good friend in high school. Yes, Macare is from Traverse City! She and Dusty met while Macare was finishing Dental School at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!).

Macare and Dusty chose Crooked Creek Ranch located on the west shores of Lake Leelanau in Cedar, Michigan as the perfect backdrop for their summer soiree and had an intimate ceremony at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City.

With the bride's roots firmly planted in Traverse City and the groom's from Ohio, Northern Michigan was the perfect vacation and homecoming for their guests. The weekend started with a canoe trip down the Platte River from Riverside Canoes through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Thursday with friends and family. On Friday Macare and her bridesmaids headed to Epiphany Salon in downtown Traverse City for some pampering while Dusty and his groomsmen hit the links at The Crown Golf Course. After their rehearsal the wedding party made their way to Old Mission Tavern on the Old Mission Peninsula- Macare's grandmother Verna Bartnick is the owner and sculptor who's art is featured at the tavern.

Saturday morning came around and the day could not have been any more perfect. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the day courtesy of Jen Kroll Photography...

Happy Thanksgiving

I made a promise to myself yesterday that I would NOT turn on my computer and to enjoy the day with family therefore this blog entry is really "on time" and not "a day late."

I love Thanksgiving. It's a holiday that is genuine- focused on being thankful and appreciative. There are no gifts or the stress of earning approval or the feeling of having to evoke fake-excitement (you all know what I am talking about there).

Kyle and I are very fortunate to be able to see both our our families in the same day. We live about a hour away from his parents and 10 minutes from my parents. We met our new niece Violet for the first time, ate way too much food (two dinners) and then laughed until we cried while googling "how wine corks are made" and trying to say Cork Oak Tree really fast 5 times in a row- try it. On top of the fun we are so thankful to have such great families and homes.

This isn't a "soap box" entry it's a reality entry. We take for granted our roof over our heads, running water in our kitchens and bathrooms, electricity, fine food on the table... We do live in a country where it's possible to own a home and land and a country that fights for our freedom. We have great people in our lives that love us unconditionally.

I hope over the next couple days, while you are fighting the next person in line for the last GI Joe, or whatever toy is the "it" item, you take a moment to be thankful for what you have- and most importantly tell those you love you are thankful for them. Here is what I am thankful for...

My husband Kyle.
My parents Steve and Gail.
My brother Andrew.
My puppy Murphy.
My extended family(s).
My friends who are scattered all over the city and country.
My company that started off as a dream.
My beautiful home that's safe and warm.
My faith and belief in the I Am.

Face with a Name

Since launching A Day in May, Event Planning & Design in 2007 I have never had a picture of myself on our website. In our industry we are always behind the scenes and never a part of the pictures or the full experience thus I never thought it was really "me" to have a picture on the site. I didn't want clients to judge what I looked like and who they thought I was as a person- just like judging a book by it's cover (which I do all the time). And I wanted my work to speak for itself.

BUT, this past August I got an email from my now friend Cory Weber, with Cory Weber Photography that cracked me up! I was in Colorado for a client's wedding and he apparently "thought" he saw me at the airport when I was leaving Traverse City- at this time we hadn't met yet. He proceeded to tell me how he had to look (more like scour) my blog for a picture of me to make sure it really was me that he saw, all the while trying to not sound stalker-ish (no worries Cory, I never thought that... well maybe for a second!).

I realized that being behind the scenes was important to a degree but building a company and a niche for myself in the local and Michigan market meant I needed to be present and accessible. Also, recognizable. So, my dearest friend and our very own Wedding photographer, Jen Kroll, agreed to take some pictures for me one fall evening. As usual we had a blast and enjoyed "I'm too Sexy" jokes while she captured my inner spirit.

It was through Jen's work that I saw myself for the first time. There is a rawness to seeing yourself. I mean, really seeing yourself for the first time. Even though I've crossed all these milestones in my life I still "saw" myself as this insecure girl with big dreams. But thanks to Jen I see a strong woman who loves life, family, friends, God's creation. I see my mother's daughter and my father's daughter. I see my husband's wife and my brother's sister. I see a friend. I see me.

Inspiration: Roma, Part II

The last Sunday of every month the Vatican Museum opens it doors to the public for free and we just so happened to be there the last day of the month. However as Andrew and I found out, this wasn't "any given Sunday."

We got up early to get in line at St. Peter's to climb the dome. There were a substantial amount of people in the square and in the basilica- actually an abnormal amount of people. We got in "line", the line we thought was to the ticket counter to the dome but was actually a line to sit in the basilica for service. It was Pentecost Sunday and we were at the Vatican.

We are not Catholic, we are Christians and believers in God, however I must admit it was amazing seeing the pilgrimage at the Vatican that day. For those of you unfamiliar with Pentecost it marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus as described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2, or the "Church's Birthday."

Since service was being held we were unable to climb the dome- it really is a spectacular view, I climbed it last visit. We made our way back through St. Peter's Square to go get in line at the Musei Vaticani when Andrew saw the Vatican police...

I am not sure what I did to my camera to make everything look like Smurfville but the most important thing here to notice is that the officers are riding around in a Lamborghini golf cart! Yes, it says Lamborghini and it's a golf cart!

Remember we went on this European holiday for Andrew to drive on the autobahn and for Andrew to see Porche and Mercedes. But Andrew was more excited to see this golf cart than he was to see the coveted engine room at Porche. We could have just skipped the rest right? (Just kidding!)

Since the line for the VM was already around the Vatican wall close to the square I hopped in line while Andrew got Mom and Dad. For those of you who know me, given the opportunity to strike conversation I will. It was suiting that I'd be behind two lovely people from the Netherlands who happen to study in Maine and have traveled to Michigan. As we chatted about the romance and mystery of Rome I shared my knowledge of the city with these first time visitors. Had a Roman been standing behind me they may have been laughing however I was loving being a tour guide!

The entrance to the VM is very unassuming for all that lies behind the doors. Noted as the most extensive and expensive private collection of artwork in the world it's massiveness is noted not only in size but the many names that reside in it's walls. Names like Raphael, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bernini, etc. etc.

Again, I need to abbreviate so I'm only going to share two pictures. My two favorites in the VM- the Gallery of Maps and the Sistine Chapel.

La Galleria delle carte geografiche (Gallery of Maps) were commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII by Ignazio Danti. He was a professor of math at Bologna and was appointed by the Pope to paint a number of "modern day" maps of Italy. The room is guilded in every sense of the word and you are in awe by the accurateness and detail Danti places in his works. I have a fascination with maps and this room is nothing short of a jaw dropper. The gallery actually is a long hallway connecting two parts of the VM. However notice the picture... and the frescos above. That's not plaster or cast statues, all the details above the hallway are 2D!

(How do I go from maps to the pièce de résistance of the Vatican collection, the Sistine Chapel?) We made our way up the small back stairs and through two moderately sized wooden doors into the chapel. The Sistine Chapel is the work of many talented painters including Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and Sandro Botticelli. This picture here is of Michelangelo's Last Judgement which he painted from 1535 to 1541 and for five years (1508-1512) he painted upside down, on his back, the incredible images on the vault of the chapel depicting the Bible's defining moments.

It was so cool to see my parents and bother see the beauty and talent of these masters up front. My Dad is an artist and what a cool experience for him to see these masterpieces in real life and not in a book.

Okay, so that's it on the Vatican Museum. From there we headed into St. Peter's Basilica- since Mom and Dad hadn't checked it out yet and the mass was over.

One would think that Pentecost would be enough activity however walking out of St. Peter's we noticed (for the first time even though I'd been walking around there all morning) that there were thousands of people lining the streets an riders with cars were winding there way through Rome's streets. Yes we were smack dab in the middle of the Giro d' Italia Centennial- the second largest international cycling competition to the Tour de' France!

Our afternoon was going to be spent visiting the Forum and the Colosseum, little did we know that the Giro was to end at the Colosseum and that we'd be fighting thousands more people just to get there. But it was incredibly cool seeing these professional cyclists and all their teams finishing the race outside of one of Seven Wonders of the Modern World!

If you haven't seen the movie The Gladiator with Russel Crow you need to. It's a fantasized but somewhat accurate account of the blood bath known as the Colosseum. Construction originally started on the Colosseum in 72 AD- that's over 1,900 plus years ago! Here are a few of my favorite images...

Walking back from the Colosseum we tracked through the Forum and the history the streets and Seven Hills contain. And since I was tired of seeing "old" things I found these adorable Jordan Almond flowers. I must use them for a wedding :)

And of course we need a family portrait. I gave my DSLR to someone to take our pic in front of St. Peter's but the focus didn't turn out so this time around I gave my SD800 to the photographer, aka. American tourist, but it appears that a finger print is blurring the bottom right hand portion. It's perfect. Our lives are never really in focus right!

Hmmm... I guess that's it. That's our trip. Hopefully I spared you all the history you didn't really want (even though I love it!) and gave you some insight to the dis-functionality but reasons why I love my family so much... oh and Kyle... yes this whole time I missed him and spoke with him almost daily while he was eating lunch. It was such a gift to travel again as a family of four and I will keep these memories forever. Traveling with 4 adult minds can be challenging but once I put my "little girl" cap back on it was fabulous!

Let's hope our coins in Trevi Fountain work... I am looking forward to my return visit! Ciao bella!

Inspiration: Roma, Part I

Yes, the bus ride to Rome was less eventful and the transition from bus station to hotel was effortless. This time our home for a few days was a Roman apartment just outside the Vatican Walls (the north eastern area of Rome).

Once settled in we headed out to explore. Rome was the last European city I visited in 2005 with Christina and Lindsey on our Graduation Trip. I was our tour guide then and it seemed fitting I'd be the tour guide once more. Rome is not for the faint of heart. It's for lovers of life and people. It truly is the heart of modern civilization. I'm still flabbergasted by the blend of modern structures and ancient ruins.

Since we were right next to the Vatican we headed to St. Peter's Square. Just as we saw a wedding in Siena earlier that day we came upon two wedding parties in SPS. The light during the early evening was very pretty and made for a great walk.

One of two of Bernini's fountains in the piazza. This obelisk is the only remaining Egyptian obelisk from ancient Rome still standing.

From St. Peters we walked toward the Tiber River to cross the Ponte Sant'Angelo. Yes, that is where Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons reached the climax. It's a stunning bridge faced with travertine and adorned with ten angels.

Continuing our journey in typical Alicia fashion I had my head buried in a map determined to retrace some of our steps from my last trip to Rome. I love the energy and excitement of dining outside in Rome thus we made our way to Piazza Navona. To save you hours of reading my nonsense here is a brief history- in ancient times it was as stadium where Romans would come to watch the games, it's home to Bernini's Four Rivers fountain, Porta's Fountain of Neptune and is considered by many a fine example of Baroque architecture and art in Rome.

Apparently Andrew still thinks we're in Germany. What the...? Bathed in evening light here is the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. The church marks the site where Saint Agnes was martyred.

From Piazza Navona we made our way through the streets to the Pantheon and Piazza della Rotonda. The original Pantheon was build by Marcus Agrippa in the 2nd century and has been used continuously throughout history.

There is a fabulous gelato shop just outside in the piazza and many great restaurants to enjoy the endless people watching. Not to mention, the best espresso I've ever had is just off the east side of the piazza known as Tazza D'Oro. Four years ago I had my first true espresso there and of course I brought Dad and Andrew (Mom doesn't like drink coffee) to experience the goodness. Dad loved it but Andrew not so much. We still have our beans we use for espresso when the Kroll's come to visit- right Jay?

And what would be a night in Rome without a trip to Trevi Fountain? I could try and explain the rush of people, trinket sellers and tourists or the impressiveness this fountain exudes but I can't. This post is already getting too long!

Andrew is tossing a coin into the fountain for good luck and a return trip to Rome. Over 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day!

With a full day ahead of us we made our way back to our apartment. Tuscany in the morning, Rome in the evening. Who lives like this? Apparently we did! Next up- Musei Vaticani, St. Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum and Pentecost.

Inspiration: Siena

With a fabulous hotel nestled in the heart of Tuscany we set in for a few days of relaxation and a slower pace of life that only the Tuscan's can create.

In Siena the city center is walkable in a half a day and major sites are clearly marked. Our first stop of the day was the grandiose cathedral, the Duomo. Construction began on the Duomo in the 12th century- hard to believe something so massive and detailed could be so old! In the 1300's plans were made for an addition that would rival Italy's other prominent cathedrals but construction was never completed.

Having seen on a prior trip to Italy the Duomo in Florence and St. Peter's Basilica (stay tuned for the next post) I wasn't expecting much however I was incredibly impressed and in awe of the fantastic mosaic floors, craftmanship and famous artists that contributed to its creation.

As I mentioned in the last post I could go on and on about the beauty and awe of this cathedral but I'd spend two pages telling you about all the history and details. Like I said... Rick Steves.

And, also as I mentioned last post, Siena is home to Palio which takes place in the Piazza del Campo. We grabbed fabulous pizzas and vino for lunch on Il Campo and people watched while eating al fresco.

After lunch Andrew and I decided we'd like to climb the Torre del Mangia (the tower of Siena). I don't remember how many steps it was but I do remember almost having a panic attack- the stairs are so narrow that you have to step carefully and duck your head to not hit the cramped steps above you. Because of the close quarters only 25 people are allowed at a time but the view is spectacular. (I had to include this cool picture of the bowled piazza. Even though the tower walls are 11 feet thick on either side I was worried when they sad it "shifts in the wind.")

This was just one of the breathtaking views from the top. Funny story. We reached the look out and there were two others up top. One was wearing a Hope College t-shirt. (For those unfamiliar Hope College is in Holland, Michigan.) After asking if he attended Hope this world traveler was a fellow Michigander. Small world.

With our feet on solid ground again we wondering the Sienese streets. Many ancient charms still remain- like these awesome hooks and rings where riders used to tie their horses.

There were beautiful pottery shops everywhere. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns are captivating. I purchased a small piece from a local artist but I adored these tiles representing the many neighborhoods of Siena and their coats of arms. And since I've been traveling I have discovered my love for gated courtyards and the vines that hold their secrets. (I have a fabulous shot of wisteria vines at Windsor Castle in England in my office.)

As the sun set on another gorgeous day in Italy (my heaven on earth) we made our way to the grocery store and gathered a feast for the ages... Parmesan cheese, focaccia bread, salami, prosciutto and a bottle of Chianti Classico. I slept well even though all through the trip Andrew and I either shared a bed or a bedroom. Praise God I had my own bed this leg of the trip because his snoring was horrible!

We woke with more sun and a warm breeze. Since we had no adjenda other than making our bus at 3:00 at the station (this time we were prepared) to head to Rome our morning was relaxed with the exception of the three cappuccinos Dad, Andrew and I each had. Our server/cook at the Villa was a fantastic barista! Once the caffine was mixed thoroughly with my blood stream I was ready to go and had a one track mind for gelato.

The front desk attendant called a cab and we were off to wander Siena's streets one last time. And look what we found...

Even though I was fixated on my pinapple, coconut and cherry vanilla gelato I managed to focus just long enough across Il Campo to find none other than an Italian wedding.

It was so sweet and intimate. The couple and guests walked from the church to this charming restaurant right on the pizza called La Biblioteca. It appeared as if they had rented the entire establishment and they sang, danced and dined on Siena's biggest stage. I loved her bouquet- you can see it slightly above in my paparazzi picture (I had to hide my camera under the gelato to not look like a freaky tourist).

The perfect ending to the most perfect taste of Tuscany. Each time I take a bite, enjoy and leave wanting more... till next time.

Our journey back to Rome was not as exciting as our journey to Siena however when we arrived I was ready to take on the chaos and as i said, "bella chaos!"

Inspiration: Journey to Siena and Villa Montarioso

Well it's been a while since I actually posted about our European adventure but I'm determined to finish our travel recap over the next few days then really dive into A Day in May. But where was I, oh yes...

My mom did a great job planning the trip down to all the transport details and logistics but the one "transition" (a term I love to use in the event industry) that was not planned was getting from Stuttgart to Siena. We had great flights on Swiss Air (highly recommend) and arrived on time in Zurich and then again in Rome. From Rome we were funneled to baggage claim where I began formulating our next steps thus feeling a little uneasy knowing the chaos that lays down the train track... Roma.

We got tickets for the local train from Leonardo Da Vinci (Rome's airport) to the city and through the grace of Rick Steve's Italy (never leave home without his books!) we made it on the right train and headed in the right direction. While following the train stops and matching the names of the stops I somehow miscounted and we all got off in the wrong district. We had to wait another 8 minutes before the train came around and we were able to board. Once on we had two stops to go until the main bus station.

Okay, let's try this again. We get off the bus and head into the building. Where was the bus ticket office? (Last time in Rome and in Europe we never traveled by bus.) Where were the officials? I hastely grab my dad and we walk to the EuroRail booth to ask about the bus stop. He directs us out of the station and into an adjacent parking lot. We've now been "in" Rome for over 2 hours and time that we don't know exists is ticking.

Finally the bus station but no buses going to Siena on the "Departure" list. I'm now freaking out inside thus the outside is tense and bright red. We get to the front of the line and the clerk said "the last bus to Siena is leaving. Now." WHAT!!!! We tell Mom and Andrew to run to the bus while we get tickets. I wave at the driver who by the grace of God sees me. He is thankfully still loading luggage and getting passengers seated.

With no minute to spare we make the last bus to Siena for the next 24 hours. If that's not God I don't know what is! So... we now have about 3 hours of the Italian scenery to enjoy. Leaving Rome was chaos, as Rick Steves says "Rome is chaos" and the Romans bella chaos. The view from the bus window changed from traffic and congestion to green fields and expansive vistas. I sat back and took it in.

I could go on and on about Italy, more specifically Tuscany, however for time's sake and my eagerness to share pictures here is the short of it. Siena is an medieval walled city in the heart of Tuscany. It's divided into nieghborhoods which are similar to NYC's boroughs. The city is known for Palio- the medieval horse race that takes place twice a year (once in July and again in August). Their city center, Il Campo, is where all the action takes place. Check out James Bond with Daniel Craig and you'll see the first part of the movie is filmed during Palio.

Anyways, it's a sleepy town that is filled with everything Tuscan, thus everything delicious, wonderful and heavenly...

Kudos to Mom because she found the most awesome hotel ever, Villa Montarioso located in Monteriggioni which is about a 10 minute cab right from the center of Siena. A 200 year old palace that was bought by the church and converted into a chic, comfortable and most importantly Italian, hotel. And this was the first view we saw...

Enough about the hotel let's dive into Siena. We got settled and headed into town for a fantastic meal and strolled along the streets. I didn't take too many pictures as I was enjoying the warmth of the night and the secrets the walls around us kept.

This is the Palazzo Salimbeni which is home to the Monte dei Paschi de Siena- one of the oldest banks in continuous existence. It was founded during the 15th century and has been going strong ever since!

Through my daily searching on Esty today I found the most intriguing illustration crafted for a unique couple.

Tandem, created by Aimee Sicuro is best described through her voice "It doesn't really matter who's driving. It only matters that you get there together!" As stated on her Etsy profile, a little over a year ago she moved from New York to pursue the career of freelance illustrator. Her work has been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Oprah Magazine, Prevention Magazine, Yoga Journal, The Wall Street Journal, Continental Airlines Magazine, Simon and Schuster and Reader's Digest Best Life Magazine.

Incorporating art like Tandem into your stationary suite and wedding is a old yet new trend on the rise again!

Inspiration: Stuttgart

As I mentioned after Porsche Dad, Andrew and I took the train into Stuttgart Schlossplatz or "the city center of Stuttgart. We climbed up the stairs from the Hauptbahnhof (station) and were instantly teleported into a bustling city.

The Schlossplatz is home to the Center for the Arts, the New Castle (which is in the background of a few photos), the Alte Kanzlei, and great people watching benches. Here's the reason why Dad and Andrew are the two worst people to site see with... we walked so fast (for no apparent reason) that I was only able to snap photos and not really learn what each building/landmark was! Aye, aye, aye!! (Not to worry, with Rick Steve's at my finger tips in Italy I was running the show!)

So unfortunately I learned what these landmarks were when we returned home and I googled them! Nonetheless here are some of sites around Stuttgart!

This is all that remains of the old city center (Schillerplatz) of Stuttgart. During WWII most of the city was destroyed and rebuilt.

As we wandered we found this beautiful bell tower adjacent to the Old Castle.

The further we walked away from the tower the closer we got to the goods... check out the banner on the left side of the picture :)

Around the west side of the Old Castle were these incredible tree canopies. I fell in love with their translucentness and shapes.

Even though we did not spend much time in Stuttgart and Germany we had a great time exploring the city and the sights. I would recommend to anyone heading to Germany soon to visit Stuttgart!

Now I'm not biased (after all I am German) but the next stop on our European Vacation was the stop I was looking forward to the most... Siena, Italy in the heart of Tuscany.

Inspiration: Porche

Let me preface this post... so Andrew wanted to go to Germany, drive on the Autobahn and see some factories. All good, great, grand. Alicia was just along for the ride, right? Wrong... when my mom said we somehow by the grace of God were given access to Porche's factory tour I about flipped my lid. I'm not a connoisseur of automobiles but if there is one automobile that revs my engine it's Porche. And for all you American's out there it's not "Por-sh" it's "Por-sha."

Okay, sorry about that :) Where was I? Oh yes, so this trip was about the cars and boy did we see them. When we arrived at Porche we had to check our camera's, bags and jackets into lockers- you aren't allowed to take anything on the factory tour. We had this adorable German student who lead us through the engine room, upholstery room (did you know all of Porche's interiors are hand sewn on 6 machines!) and the various stages of the assembly line. Since I wasn't allowed to photograph I sat back and reveled in the awe and majesty of a hand build Porche.

At the end of the tour I was waiting for my new car keys to the 911. That didn't happen. But what did was our tour of the museum. Much smaller in scale than Mercedes but just as impressive, here are some of my favorite pics. I love how all the cars smile :)

Inspiration: Mercedes

Our first full day in Germany wasn't so "hot"- it was cool and rainy so Dad, Andrew and I headed to the Mercedes Museum for six hours. Yes, you heard me correctly. S-I-X H-O-U-R-S of automobile and world history, famous vehicles and insanely cool museum layouts :)

Sorry I didn't take the picture back far enough so I had to paste the two together- the building is MUCH larger than it looks!

This looks like something from Star Trek! In Mercedes you start at the top of the building and work your way down...

It's only appropriate to be greeted by a horse when you get off the elevator. Afterall this was how man moved around the world for centuries before cars. I know, hard to believe!

After the horse you were transported into the invention of the modern engine and automobile. As I don't know all the facts (my dad and brother were spouting off statistics and names constanty) about cars I spent my afternoon inspired by cool shapes, textures and my love for details...

This was from a bus used in the mid 50-60's in Argentina... who would have known!

I love the faces! Had this car been a person her name would have been Roberta- round and happy!

Do you remember the Vanderbilt family? Here is Mr. Vanderbilt's Mercedes, this just so happens to be the oldest Mercedes in existence! Yep, from an American family.

I told you this building was incredible! I know it's won a few international awards too!

Of course, here's Andrew (my brother) who is all smiles after spending the day with these priceless gems! The next day we headed to my favorite... Porche!

European inspiration

Before our season at A Day in May kicked into high gear at the end of May (I know, it's been two full months) my parents, brother and I embarked on our very own version of "National Lampoons: European Holiday."

We didn't get kidnapped or create any minor disasters however we took in the sites, sounds and culture the way only the Fritz Family could! With incredible airfare, under $400 from Traverse City... we are the 3rd most expensive airport to fly in and out of in the country, we flew across the pond to Stuttgart, Germany where our journey began.

Where is Stuttgart you may ask and why go there? Stuttgart prides itself in being the creative power of Germany. Located near the Black Forest and north of Switzerland it's home to two of my favorite things- Porsche and Mercedes :) But... when we arrived at 9:30am Germany time we didn't head into the city, we headed to the sleepy medieval town of Tübingen about 30 minutes outside the city.

This university town has been in the record books since the 12th century and survived WWII through it's lack of industry and catering to the more popular rise of tourism.

I'm no Jen Kroll or Bob Davis but here are some shots I took while walking around with the family (DISCLAIMER- my photo editing skills are not as sharp either but we're getting there!):

So cool huh! This was an old town government building that is now the local library.

I love these half-timbered houses. Walking along the cobblestone streets and gazing upward provided an interesting look at their architecture and color.

This was the only "cool" spot with a dampness that chilled you to the bone- it was welcome as we crossed the town... very hot that day! This would be an even cooler shot had I taken the picture before we started walking down.

This trip I wasn't taking pictures for the sake of taking pictures. I wanted to "play" with my photography not document every site we saw. I love this tile look from a gate over a window up the hill to the castle. Don't be surprised if you see this again :)

Schloß Hohentübingen or better known in english as Castle High Tübingen, was built in the 11th century but in the 12th and 13th century wooden walls shown here were incorporated. The castle is now home to the Univerty of Tübingen's ancient studies and overlooks the Nekar Region.

With the stifling heat and the onset of crankiness setting in from no sleep we headed back to Stuttgart. Oh I forgot to mention one minor detail... Andrew drove us on the Autobahn... in a pimped out Mercedes we rented... nice graduation present huh! Only problem was that it started to rain and heavy traffic around the city prevented him from really "driving" on the Autobahn. Next time...

It is both an honor and an extreme privilege for me to announce that A Day in May was voted as The Best Wedding Planner in the Traverse City Area via Up North Live and is now a member of Traverse City's A-List Vendors!

Voting began about two months ago and ADIM was nominated! (Thank you for whomever nominated us!) There were over 14,000 votes cast for the A-List and we'd like to thank everyone who left us encouraging and heartfelt comments as well as those who showed their support in voting!

Having officially broken onto the stage over two years ago we are still in awe of the incredible people and clients that come our way. I truly have the greatest job... yes days can be long and weekends working can be difficult but the reward is so sweet. There is nothing that brings me more satisfaction than the happiness on my clients' faces!!

Cheers to all our phenomenal colleges who were also nominated and big thanks to those of you whom we work with regularly. There is no "I" in team and sometimes it takes an Army to execute a wedding!

The Big Picture

Many clients and contacts ask me, "Alicia, what is your favorite part of the day or planning process?" Those who know me know that I am a detail freak and fine stationary aficionado- there is nothing more beautiful than a deep letterpress or an engraved sheet of pressed cotton. It's like finding the last pair of Christian Louboutin nude pumps in your size- sends chills down my spine! But, at heart, I am a helpless romantic.

My most favorite part of the whole process from design to action is the wedding ceremony itself. There is something so magical and awe inspiring to see two people commit their lives together forever. In our society marriage is not taken seriously. It's been viewed as a "convenient relationship" not a "lasting covenant."

Call me biased but I love our Pastor! One of my favorite parts of our wedding was when he asked the congregation to stand and promise to guide and lead Kyle and I through our marriage, to come along side us in times of need and to mentor to each of us. Every single guest at our wedding pledged to support us. It wasn't about witnessing the legalizing of our marriage and signing a document. It was about honoring us and honoring our commitment.

Now I'm not telling you to hire our Pastor or that you have to have a religious wedding ceremony. But what I am encouraging you all to think about is the moment. The moment when two lives become one. The moment a new family is born. That moment, that instant is just as important as the rest of your wedding.

Next time you are at a wedding, or if you are planning your own wedding, do me a favor and step back to take a look at the Big Picture. There would not be an open bar, gold flatware, crystal goblets and flowers dripping from centerpieces at a wedding without the wedding itself. So instead of nodding off during the ceremony or day dreaming, listen up... you could learn something!

When I get a chance to watch daytime TV I try to tune in around 4pm just in time to watch Ellen. She is absolutely hilarious and I think I laugh out loud at least for half of her show each time I watch! Today is Ellen's birthday and she had a phenomenal musical guest on, James Morrison. I had never heard of him until just a few moments ago (shows how out of the musical loop I am) but I was blown away. I love the happiness and joy he performs with, and vocally he is truly gifted! Therefore I decided that all of you need to know about him too!

There is nothing more enjoyable than spending the afternoon in the kitchen baking yummy treats with great tunes! I recently stumbled upon Smitten Kitchen, a phenomenal blog committed to one of the things I love, food. I've had this recipe on my to do list for quite some time but I haven't gotten to it yet (like the gazillion and one other things I would like to do- learn to sew, make veggie lasagna, clean all the baseboards, re-organize my office, be more proficient with my camera, spend more time outside). My hopes by posting this incredibly yummy picture, is that someone (being you) will make Smitten Kitchen's Austrian Raspberry Shortbread. Then of course let us know how delicious they are!!

Life's a bowl of cherries!

Do you ever reminisce about the good ole' days? The days before iPhones, laptops, and the internet? Whoa, whoa, how many of you did I loose there?! I'm not suggesting that we turn back the technological clock and enter the world of morse code, I'm simply asking you to take a trip down memory lane.

To this day one of my favorite daily activities is getting the mail. Most of it's junk with credit card offers, coupon booklets or tempting catalogs that JCrew and Anthropolgie spies send knowing how much I want to buy everything in them but must restrain myself for fear Kyle would bury me in the backyard with the down spouts! But every once in a while their lies a blast from the past. The lovely script address on cotton pressed stock with colorful stamps. Nothing brings me more unexpected joy than a card or handwritten note on beautiful paper.

You will soon come to know that I have a huge obsession with stationary. But it's not just the paper, I love the guache calligraphers use to produce the beautiful addresses and the stamps, oh the stamps... I swear that my Dad wouldn't mind if I sacrificed his collection for beautiful letters!

The Cooks House

A treat for the tastebuds is exactly how I would describe Traverse City's 18 seat bistro, The Cook's House. Rarely do I get to enjoy the fabulous cuisine in the area but, yesterday local photographer and designer Chandra Demers of Hitching Post Photography and I met for lunch at this hidden treasure on Front Street in downtown TC.

A simple and uncomplicated menu designed with flavor combinations that seem to dance effortlessly on the pallet are what keeps the doors opening and closing throughout the day. From the bright colored interior to the cozy seating arrangements with white linen and parchment paper, this atmosphere is reminiscent of the cafes in Paris where friends and once dined.

Chef's and owner's Eric Patterson and Jennifer Blakeslee are transforming the local cuisine scene as we know it. From the famed Andre's restaurant in Las Vegas Patterson and Blakeslee breathe life and love into food with a passion that's spreading like wildfire. The restaurant is open Monday thru Saturday 11am to 9pm serving lunch and dinner. Reservations are recommended an can be made by calling 231.946.8700.

As my newest favorite I look forward to many more meals shared and experienced at The Cook's House!

If you haven't heard of Nettleton/Hollow you should have! This fabulous site specializes in decorative branches and dried natural elements. Justin Brandreth started this company in 2003 after his search online for branches to decorate his apartment left him empty handed.

For great design and DIY projects visit their blog. NH shows you how to use their products to make beautiful, lasting arrangements that are stunning for your dining room table or your wedding centerpieces. I love this image from their blog showing how sanded Mantanzita branches can be transformed into a weeping willow of crystals. Be sure and light this glittering masterpiece with some small canister lights to really make it pop!

Thank you to Barb Ellis, the wedding coordinator, at The Homestead Resort, in Glen Arbor for the lovely tour, dinner and spa treatments that she arranged for myself and other local event planners this past Saturday.

We started off with a great tour of the property and their many event locations, then enjoyed a great Swedish massage at their new Spa Amira perched cliffside on Lake Michigan and capped off the evening with a great wine tasting and food pairing at Nonna's Restaurant featuring wines from Silverleaf Vineyard in Suttons Bay and a fabulous menu prepared by their Executive Chef.

Day Trip No. 2

Our second day trip keeps us closer to Traverse City. We're headed to Old Mission Lighthouse!

This destination is one of my favorite beach areas because of the privacy and unique shoreline. Since we're closer to town this time I would stock up on water, fresh cherries, great cheese and crackers, plastic cups and a wine key. Why this combination, you'll see! Plan on heading out to catch the later afternoon sun to be sure and have an appetite for some great cuisine on the way home.

But, before we get to the 45th parallel (yep, that's right, OML is built exactly half way between the equator and the North Pole) from downtown TC head north on M-37 or Center Road. This takes you on Old Mission Peninsula dividing East and West Grand Traverse Bay.

I hope you left room in your cooler for a couple bottles of wine! 12 miles from the base of the Peninsula on Rue de Vin lies Chateau Chantal, one of Traverse City's esteemed vineyards and bed and breakfasts.

With a beautiful tasting room and fabulous 360 degree water views Chateau Chantal delivers on all aspects- fabulous wine and fabulous views. Tastings are complimentary however it is polite to purchase a bottle of vino if you tend on enjoying the samples!

A wonderful aromatic white wine is their 2006 Pinot Grigio. This wine finely aged in stainless steel in the cellar and is light, fruity, crisp and dry. A great addition to the picnic foods you've packed! And if you are at the Chateau and are looking for a great bubbly my personal favorite is their Celebrate sparkling wine made from Chardonnay and a splash of Pinot Noir. This blend makes a fabulous Mimosa or a Northern Michigan Bellini!

Head north from the Chateau about 5 miles until the road ends and you've arrived! Welcome to Old Mission Lighthouse. Built in 1870 the lighthouse remained active until 1933 aiding ships passing throught the rocky schoals and shallow waters of the Bays. The Parks Service is in the process of developing a Keeper program were visitors can rent the Lighthouse. However for now it's open to the public and for $4 you can climb to the top of the tower.

The beach area immediately in front of the house tends to be crowded but slightly further in either direction there is much more room for a quite picnic and lots of sun. One of the great features of the Lighthouse beach is the shoreline. Us locals aren't crazy about the low water levels but at the end of the Peninsula you can walk for over a half a mile and still touch sand. If you have sensitive feet I'd recommend some waterproof hiking shoes- it's a little rocky!

Once you find a great spot to picnic crack open the wine and enjoy a late afternoon snack in the sun. But don't stuff yourself, the Boathouse Restaurant at Bowers Harbor is waiting for dinner!

Owner and retauranteur, Doug Kosch, has been in the industry for over 20 years and has a great reputation for providing guests with wonderful dining experiences. If you're too full from your picnic to dine enjoy some the Ahi tuna or Oysters Rockefeller overlooking the sunset on West Bay. Don't be surprised when you see Chef Eric Nittolo out chatting with diners or if he approaches your table. He may even share some of his prized culinary secrets!

As you head back to town be sure and take Peninsula Drive south which follows the east shore of West Bay. But becareful, the views are stunning and if you're driving stay on the road!!

There are so many great beaches and hidden treasures to find in Northern Michigan. My first Day Trip takes us to Sleep Bear Dunes National Park.

Before you leave Traverse head to West Front Street & Maple to Mary's Kitchen Port. This delectable specialty foods and kitchen store makes amazing fresh sandwiches, salads and desserts to go. My personal lunch favorite is their Tuba Pasta- pesto, roasted turkey, tuba pasta and other yummies and a homemade carmel found at the checkout counter. Make sure to pick up a couple bottles of artisian lemonade and a giant Rice Krispe treat for the road!

From Mary's head west on Grandview Parkway then west on M-72 toward Empire. Along the drive you will be sure and find many great roadside stands stocked with fresh fruit and snacks for your day trip as you pass from Grand Traverse into Leelanau County. Once in Empire, M-72 ends. Make a left at the light and head south on M-22 about a quarter of a mile and you'll reach a chocoholics paradise, Grocer's Daughter Chocolate.

This isn't your ordinary chocolate shop. Grocer's specializes in rain forest protected certified chocolate and uses organic and natural ingredients grown in their own gardens and shop or locally throughout Leelanau County. Mimi Wheeler, the chocolatier behind this culinary treat, was the daughter of a grocer in a small town in Denmark. It was her mother, the beautiful women that graces the label of her chocolates, that inspired her to create such mouthwatering treats. One of my favorites is their Wally Bar chocked with great dried fruits, nuts and sesame seeds.

For the bite size lover try their truffles. Their heavenly flavors ensure that these morsels of love will be gone before you leave the store! And, if you are looking for an authentic Northern Michigan party or wedding favor, Grocer's will work with you to create the flavor you are looking for!

Careful not to overindulge but grab a few more chocolates to go and stash them in the cooler! Leaving Grocer's, head north on M-22 and continue on S Lacore Street (stay left at the fork) to Sleeping Bear Dunes N L. When you've hit a dirt road on the left you are almost there.

Welcome to North Bar Lake!!

Once in the parking lot make sure to pull around near the access walk and grab an envelope to fill out and deposit your Park Entrance Fee in the self pay canister. Parking for 7 days is $10 and this allows you entrance into all Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore entry points. The best time of day to enjoy North Bar is mid morning/early afternoon or late afternoon/early evening.
Many year ago when my family and I first began coming to North Bar it was still a hidden secret, very few people except the locals new about it. This isn't the case any more, the secret is out!

Be sure and load up on lots of sunscreen since there is no natural shade and bring the floaty rafts! North Bar has great sand and an awesome shore... once you step into the water the bottom drops from under you. You can literally shallow dive from the shore and surface where the water is well over your head! North Bar is also connected to Lake Michigan via a small stream. You have beautiful views of the Dunes and can enjoy body surfing on the Lake if the wind's just right! (For some more pictures of North Bar click here.)

The Water

It's impossible to pinpoint why I love Northern Michigan so much. Growing up I could not wait to spread my wings far away from Traverse City. I had big dreams of living in a city where each day would be filled with adventure and excitement not living down the road from my old elementary school. But looking back I remember the moment I knew my heart would forever belong to this northern city.

Driving home from Ann Arbor was quite a hull, almost 4 hours due north on 23N, 96W, 127N, 10N, 115N, 131N, 113W, Clark Road, Garfield Road, 3 Mile Road... 3 Mile. 3 Mile crests the hills just outside of Traverse City. As I came down the hill on my first visit back home since school had begun it hit me. That was the moment, the moment I knew I'd always be home here. All because of this beautiful wonder. Lake Michigan.

The turquoise color had cast a spell over me. This place that I was trying so desperately to leave, never really left. Once graduation past I naturally headed north. Soon after, Kyle joined. Since then we've never looked back, well... maybe once. That's a whole other story we'll chat about later!

Ever since I was baby I'd been in water. The bath, beach or the pool; it didn't matter. I would stay in the water for hours playing and splashing around, my nickname was Lish the Fish. That was exactly how I felt when I saw that blue water again. No longer was I a fish out of water, I could breathe again, I was home.

It's clear why Traverse City has become such a premier wedding and events destination. With beautiful waterfront locations, great revitalized downtown area and world renowned cuisine and wine making, Traverse City is a great retreat and close getaway for Detroiter's and Chicagoan's alike.

This week I'll take you on two of my favorite day trips from Traverse City focused around the lakes and shores of Northern Michigan. Each of these locations would be a perfect place for fabulous photos, remote picnic for two or a fun filled pre-celebratory day spent with friends and family on the water. Stay tuned!
